Carb probems (I think), runs and then shuts down...

2005 Dyna, stock carb w/ SE air cleaner kit and SE intake manifold behind carb.

Ran fine to work (about a 35 mile commute, most at highway speeds). No problems noted.

On way home, about 10-12 miles into trip it start to drag and recover and then finally shuts down and won't restart. Engine turns over, but no start up, with or without choke.

After about 10-15 minutes, it restarts and runs another 4-5 miles and shuts down, same as before.

After about 20 minutes, I check it out and it restarts and runs about a mile. By this time, the tow truck was there (thank God for free towing).

Thoughts, ideas, suggestions? It has been suggested a float is sticking, and that the fuel filter is plugged. Open for more suggestions or thoughts.

Thanks!

did you just fill up with gas? maybe bad gas. did you mess with your carb prior to the problem. You can easily check fuel flow. pull the gas line from the carb and pull vacuum line off the back of the carb and put some vacuum on the vacuum line and gas should freely pour. heck maybe your vacuum line was knocked loose.

Went out and tried to restart, and it wouldn't. Tapped on top of carb, and it did.

Possibly float, or possibly coincidence.

Need to get some sleep (work nights).

Will get up in a while and check as suggested with vacuum.

Thanks.

Pulled the carb, broke it down on both ends, cleaned everything up, checked the diaphragm for leaks with flashlight (none seen) and put it all back together. Started and revved well, but the acid test will be around town for a few days, local.

Diagnosed and (hopefully) fixed.

After last posting, I put it on road and it made it about 1 or 2 miles before it started up (the problem) again.

Get it back to the house and pull the fuel valve/petcock. Everything looks okay, but I go ahead and open the vacuum diaphragm housing and peek inside. The diaphragm isn't torn or anything, but it just doesn't look like it is in very good shape (13K miles on it).

I run down to the local Harley shop (as opposed to dealership) and the guy sells me a "Bikers Choice" free flow petcock for $20. I install it, pinch the vacuum line off, and she fires right up. Take her for a few laps around the block, and then I nut up and take her for a real spin. Put about 8-10 miles on it with no issues.

Hopefully, this is the end of the problems.

this is the replacement part:

How did it work out?

That was my exact problem on my 04. I replaced the vacuum petcock (which was leaking when the engine was off anyway!!) with a standard-type petcock and the problem was solved. Ya', so I have to switch it off when I park, just like I have for the past 40+ years on all my other bikes!

Neighbor had a similiar issue with his 05. Turned out he had a "pinched" fuel tank vent line. Drove him nuts. Of course, we found that by removing the gas cap, everything would be fine. (for a while!) Corrected the vent line and all has been good.

Hope you got it!!
