Intake sounds..."thick?"
Hard to explain this, but there's this odd, thick, throaty sound comin from my intake somewhere. When I'm sitting at idle and I goose it a little I get this sound...just a thick heavy sound on intake.
Also get some carb "sneeze" and pop every once in a while. Had a problem with plugs fouling a while back, but have since eased up on the enrichener and plugs now look perfect front and rear.
I know **** like this is hard to diagnose without hearing, just wondering though...

hi again clay...man you should get paid for all the ??s you answer here.
not really slow to rev, no. You thinking accelerator pump not adjusted right?
plugs are actually a light golden brown, almost whitish (I thought white was lean?) with just a touch of soot on the end of the threads.
bike will hesitate sometimes when getting on it from a stop and then occasionally I'll get a sneeze or pop out of the carb. Recently pulled the cover/filter and there was only tiny bit of oil in there. Filter may be a bit dirty
but...you might be right about the acc pump if that's what you're thinkin. Jetting seems about right as throttle response feels good through entire range...

lean will sound like a wahhh, and motor slow to jump. rich will jump quick, but sound dull and blubbery. no im not gonna do an audio! LOL
the hiccup says it may be lean (maybe just pilot ) but dont know at what speed (rpm) and gear you are pulling when you describe the noise.
you could also be suckin air and the jetting is fat enough to compensate after you get roling?

BWAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHHAHA
it actually sounds "dull and blubbery" right at the goose, which is also when the pop/spit/sneeze may happen. Heh...man...I'll buy you a beer if you do audio!

I do have minor pop out pipes on decel, varies from day to day. Have checked for manifold leak and everything seems ok there. Only thing...I dont have a carb backplate gasket. Could that cause intake leak? Pipes are tight as they should be.

alright, clay...you aint done yet brother.
So I took her out for about 100+ miles today, in two chunks (went to a friends house)
on the way there, goin up a long hill in 5th at about 80, I get this POP POP POP firecracker rapid backfire from the pipe, then a couple more sputters (brief loss of power simultaneously)
get to friends, but no tools there so just hang out for a bit, then on the way home same thing but way worse, and quite often. Seems to happen more under load at lower rpm...
could I have valve issues? timing? or just bad gas or bad air/fuel mixture?
sure do love this bike but PHEW it's been nothin but trouble periodically.

man, i would start at beginning. check float level, and vents. then start with common jetting and work from there.
your last post sounds like you are running out of fuel. diaphram in petcock?

I rebuilt the carb in october/november. full rebuild kit from S&S
it does kinda sound like I was running out of fuel, huh. Tanks were full, though...will check inline filter, petcock, and pull bowl and see what's up there.

use mighty vac on petcock vacuum hose. look for fuel in the mighty vac can. while applying vacuum, make sure fuel flow to fuel line is good and constant also.

just tuned her a tiny bit richer and went for a 5 miler up to 80, including up hill for drag, and...the problem seems to be remedied for now. I pulled the plugs again last night and they were still white to brown.
Interesting that you can be running lean and it still runs good, as it was before popping.
do these things go "out of tune" that easily?

not usually, but now we have ethanol. it requires more fuel to make the same power.
