Angry harley 1200 sportster erratic idle

Hi,

I am a new member from Lincolnshire, England. I have a really annoying problem that no-one can sort out. The bike starts fine and idles ok, it runs ok for about 10 miles or until the engine is warm but then if I stop the idle is really erratic up and down and it stalls after stuttering a bit. If I let the bike cool down and re-start it the idle is smooth. The bike is standard, but the carb has been cleaned out, plugs checked, all ok. I have only had the bike a few months, always done this.
can anybody help me please

Thanks

Paula

Hi Paula, here is a complete shot in the dark... Try running it with the gas cap loosened and see if there is a difference. It may be the vent on the cap is plugged or it has the wrong cap installed, and it is creating a vacuum in the fuel tank.

It might help to know what year it is too.

I had a very similar problem on my FLHT. Turned out to be the crank position sensor. When fully warm would miss at idle and sometimes would stall when coming to a stop. About $40, simple to replace.
