I'll try: Remove the inspection cover on the primary (round pc w/ two allen screws) Chain cold should be adjusted to 3/8 to 5/8" at tightest point. You will need to either put bike up on stand to spin rear tire or walk it forward. but do check the chain in several spots. (I adjust mine to 1/2"). The chain adjuster nut is on the bottom side of primary towards the front. adjust the chain tension there. there is a two nuts one adjust the other locks it in place.
Hope that helps.

lubricant level

What should the level of the oil in the primary be? Is this shared engine oil or special primary oil? Mobil one ok?

Thanks again

BTW I will be getting the service manual ASAP!! Thanks for your help.

28 oz. if you put more in it will puke out the overflow, espically if you wheelie
Buell recomends sportster primary oil. I have been running moble 1 with no problems.

I run 15/50 in primary w/ no issues. Some perfer the 75/90 gear oil.

As for to low on oil, I'm not sure, but I would guess harder shifting and finding neutral, and also chain noise.
