Is it a male or female connector. If it's a 15 pin female it's video out for a monitor. A serial will be a 9 pin male connector on the machine. If Dell is going the way of every other manufacturer on the new laptops they may have eliminated the serial port unless you use a docking station (obviously not practical for SERT operations). Haven't seen a E1505 yet, so can't say for sure.
I've had ok luck with the serial to USB adapters. Only real issue I've run into is the SERT software doesn't seem to like anything above com 4 and you can end up with the USB adapter coming up as com 9 million if you repeatedly unplug/plug it in. If you find the SERT software can't communicate, check Device Manager and see how many com ports are showing. Also check the serial to USB adapter and see what com port it's showing up as. If it's above 4, that's probably your problem. Remove the adapter (properly by using the Safely Remove Hardware option), Check to see what port your modem uses if it's active, and remove all the other com ports in Device Manager. Reboot. If you mistakenly remove a true a hardware com port, it will be detected and reinstalled after a reboot... in theory anyway.
