A couple of six inch square pieces thrown in the bags might be worth taking along on a road trip. However most of the time the extra effort required to lift the rear tire free of the ground is not needed. The advantage of a stand like mine, which leaves the rear tire in contact with the ground is that you can drive off, even with a passenger on the back. Another advantage to a stand that only lifts a part of the weight off the rear is that you can use the center stand while still on the bike.

Yup, I thought about this and figured that I mostly use the center stand to be able to get more gas in the tank and to load luggage on the bike or sit on it while stopped so it's an advantage to be able to get it on the stand while on the bike. The times I actually need to get the rear tire off the ground is only for cleaning at home so a board will work fine. Good suggestion on keeping couple square pieces in the bags in case of a flat.
