1L243,

You have asked a good question. First of all my stand will take the rear wheel off the ground for cleaning or removing the tire with just a 3/8ths or 1/2 inch piece of plywood under the feet. A couple of six inch square pieces thrown in the bags might be worth taking along on a road trip. However most of the time the extra effort required to lift the rear tire free of the ground is not needed. The advantage of a stand like mine, which leaves the rear tire in contact with the ground is that you can drive off, even with a passenger on the back. Another advantage to a stand that only lifts a part of the weight off the rear is that you can use the center stand while still on the bike.
