Here is my question......what does "pre-det" pinging sound like on a Harley. I am very framiliar with car engine pre-det and pinging, but here is the closest comparision to what I have on my bike:

Does anyone remember what the old VW bugs sounded like at their exhaust. Kind of a high pitch "echo" quater falling in a glass sound?

I hear that on my bike especially when I am riding over a bridge and the echo off the walls brings it in clear.

If anyone can decode my ramblings......awsome and thank you
That's a tough sound to describe, but sort of a metallic clinking noise from the top of the engine. I'm guessing that what you're hearing is your exhaust as well especially if you're just cruising along. Try rolling into the throttle between 2-3K in different gears and see if you can hear anything coming from the engine and not the exhaust. Turn your head sideways and it will help to cut down on the wind noise also.
