I was really hopeing for U2. But then I thought that probably wouldn't of happend because they weren't an American band. So after reading this board it kinda felt that The Boss would have been a great American band to span the age groups, as well as U2 would have I felt.
So my closing act first choice would have been U2 then Bruce Springsteen.
The funny thing is that the local talk radio show had info that it was going to be Elton. They made a call to their scheduler or whoever and they said the had no comment. I was thinking at the time "yeah right, no F'n way."

I was hoping for Areosmith, ZZ Top, Rolling Stones or something more of an American ICON type of band.

Even tho we didn't plan to stick around, I had my own ideas for the "mystery band". The Stones are my all time favorite band, but I thought the likelyhood of them showing was slim, and anyway I felt it should be an All American party band, i.e. ZZTop, John Cougar, etc. I actually thought it might be the reorganized Lynard Skynard. Some other bands that would have worked much better... Blues Traveler, Widespread Panic, Springsteen, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, anybody but a wannabe disco/country singer, a wannabe dirtbag/badboy, and an aging overweight english guy who knows what penis tastes like.

Excellent picks! I would add Bon Jovi to that list.

HAHAHA
I have to say that was the worst part of my trip. I am 28 years old and not into Elton at all. Doobies are alright (a little before my time, but i can deal with them). I think the other activities had better bands like Ted Nugent, Bad Company and BB king. I would have rather seen a cover band playing real rock and roll then Elton. I know a few people there were into him. Half of them being women over 40 and the other half were men that were to drunk to know they owned a harley. I think all the sober ones left as soon as they saw who was on the stage.
bottom line.
After standing in line for an hour just to pay 14 bucks for a cheeseburger, fish and chips and a mountain dew, then paying 7 bucks for the "jumbo" draft i was really sad i came. I think water st. or brady would have been the place to be that night.

Hoping that they would've gotten Page/Plant/Jones to do a Zep reunion or Waters back w/Gilmour to have a Floyd Dark Side of Moon show... Either of those would've been worthy of the "mystery" surrounding Sunday's event.

Aerosmith, Seeger, Thorogood, ZZ, ANYTHING along those lines. McGraw was OK, who the hell is Kid Rock anyway, I like Elton but that was the wrong setting for him. Saw the Doobies at Summerfest on Friday night and they were GREAT. We left after McGraw did about 3 songs and heard KR "screeching" out a couple of songs and were glad we left. All in all, a great 4 days of Harley'ing, though!

I did not get the chance to go, but i can't belive that Elton was the mistery guest, not in touch with the HD crowd, but some genius tougth it was a goos idea, I would have hoiper for .38 special, U2, Aerosmith, Kiss, Bon Jovi, or the Boss, but we dont live in perfect world.

Its not like the MoCo didn't know the 100th was coming up, the first Anniversary was the 85th. They had "15 years" to find an "A" preformer for the final show. For the 90th they had ZZ Top, don't remember who was there for the 95th. Geeze, just in the last five years alone they could have made some contract agreements with a "A" band/preformer. Five years in advance most of these groups are not booked.
I would have liked to see, ZZ, Eagles, Stones, Springsteen, somebody that could ROCK the crowd.
I believe the person who booked these acts is really a under cover Goldwing rider in the Co. and did this as a joke.

I will always remember the laugh I had when I realized that the "Big Secret" was Elton F'n John"!
I stood up and laughed my way back to my bike.
I was not at all angry...I had a blast and did not rely on any MoCo events to make or break my trip. As far as I was concerned the MoCo was not even needed. Yet, I did enjoy some of their events.
Then I started to feel really sorry for the suckers that paid waaaay too much to some Sh*tHead scalper to get into the event. Lesson learned I hope!

until i read that i never even thought about the scalpers and the people who bought from them. now thats good for a laugh. unl;ess of course they were elton john fans then i guess they made out ok. all in all it was a great week. i think i got more of a chuckle walking back to summerfest listening to people cussing our the moco than i had all week. a lot of people forgot all about the fun stuff they did all week and focused on such a short period of time. too bad for them.

Well, ya can't be surprised by the MoCo's selection after all their editor for HOG Tales has been female for some time now and most of their articles are geared for "The International Crowd" so should you be surprised??? We live in a PC world dammit
I agree with a previuos poster, if you went all the way to Milwaukee for the bands I don't feel a least bit sorry for you, Just by a few good Molly Hatchet / Boston CD's for your future cruises.
Forget about it and go for a ride [ OH YEAH remember the words to "Born to be wild" Headen out on the highway looking for adventure; You know the rest]
Sunshine, fresh air, chrome, beer and skin (females of course) keep ya alive.
Have a good day folks!

Actually that is exactly what I was going to go for. I bought the ticket in advance and waited to hear the bands. When I heard the announced bands I backed out and sold my ticket. When I learned there was going to be a surprise band i was bumming, because i thought it would be Bruce, but well...i'm not bumming anymore.

Trip of a lifetime
Well guys, its over, years of expectation, months of planning and only 3 weeks of actual riding and we are home, nothing but too many new tee shirts, some credit card bills and a head full of memories.
HD was having a party and my riding buddy and I just had to be there. He was riding solo, and I had my life partner with me, she is as crazy about Harleys as I am but this trip would surely test even her capabilities on the pillion.
We flew into San Francisco just in time to meet up with our bikes which had made it safely overland from New York and were waiting for us at the designated time, I have ridden several times in the US but there is no feeling like climbing on your own bike at the beginning of a dream trip. Harley was starting a “ride home” from Portland in 3 days so no time to linger got to get out of the big city and experience the real US of A.
The Mustang seat ordered weeks before was waiting at Portland HD as promised and it really is a “marriage” saver, 3500 miles in 15 days riding and our only regret was why cant we just keep going.
As we made our way across beautiful country previously only flown over a pattern was developing, despite the many more Harleys on the road than you see anywhere in Europe, it just wasn’t possible to stop anywhere without immediately gathering if not a crowd then certainly another fascinating conversation. Forget the politics, the true America is the people and they are without doubt the friendliest and most hospitable anywhere, we met nothing but smiles, welcomes and thanks for visiting! Flying the flag, him the Union Jack and me the blue and white of Scotland made us no less noticeable. Something like 2500 bikes left Portland, many more came and went from all over as we made our own way across meeting up or not as it took us at the dealer parties along the way. We began to enjoy the small town atmosphere and chose to stay outside of the bigger places and we were the richer for it, not once did we feel less than completely welcomed as we described yet again some of our adventures.
Arriving on schedule in Milwaukee was almost an anticlimax and enjoyable as a lot of the myriad of arranged events were we really could think of nothing better than getting back on the road, I really believe this road trip may never end.
My anniversary Road King Classic ran flawlessly all the way despite 110 degree temperatures and ridiculous amounts of luggage, we bonded more than ever, the wrench of parting at the airport in Chicago was huge, we hadn’t been apart for 3 weeks and now we wont be together again the other side of the pond until October, how can I wait.
With heavy heart we climbed on to our flight home back to our lives, tired, much poorer but richer by far than words can ever tell, thank you America, we will return!!
