Question Advice please

I plan to travel from the United Kingdom for the 100th Anniversary Party. I'll fly into Chicago, but because of the lack of accomodation I was planning to get a hotel in Chicago and to catch the Amtrak up to Milwaukee each day. The trouble is that the last train back is at 7.30 in the evening. Can anyone tell me if there is any alternative transport back to Chicago later than this?

Thanks, GT - UK

Talking

Greyhound Bus Lines should have a bus at about 8 PM and 11:45 PM. Just remember to be sober enough to find the bus station!

I hate to break the news to you, but Amtrak makes RailTrack (British railway service) look positively outstanding. Amtrak shares the (delipidated) rails with freight trains, and usually takes second place AFTER the freight trains have gone through. I've taken the Amtrak to Chicago from Milwaukee (s/b about 2 hours) and had it take over four hours. In a word, its pretty miserable here in the midwest.

You can catch a bus (try the United Limo service - they have a website to check for times and locations.) Its not great either - they stop at every tiny hamlet along the way, usually to pick up zero passengers - but at least their times cover a wider part of the day.

I'm riding form Costa Rica to try to catch up with the guys that start up the "ride home" in Baton Rouge.

Once in Milwaukee don't have any agenda or booked place, so what's the best? stay in Chicago and ride everyday, How long does it take.

Any info would be most apreciated..

Chicago to Milwaukee is about 90 miles. Chicago is a city of over 6 million people. If you go in rush hour, it is tough sledding. If traffic is low to moderate, it is a fast high speed ride.

Hotel rooms appear to be booked from Milwaukee outward as far as Madison. We booked campground space at the Kettle Moraine South campground 37 miles from Milwaukee. It cost us $40 for 3 nights plus we will have to buy a $30 state park pass. Still a good price and pretty close to the action... or far enough out if we want to escape the action.

If you want to check campground space go to http://www.reserveamerica.com You can then drill down to the closest campground and check availability and reserve a site.

You can also try to find a new friend who will share space... but if you fail, you are sleeping on your sled.

Have a great party and a safe ride from Costa Rica.
