If you need help......

I live right here in Milwaukee. I just found this forum last night and will be a frequent visitor as well.
If anybody needs anything, or needs to know anything about the area such as hotels in a 30-45 mile radius, or campgrounds, just let me know.
The event is going to be held on the Summerfest grounds which is huge, they hold the worlds largest music festival there every year for about 2 weeks straight.

Welcome to the forum Bill. There's going to be a forum get together which Buzz is setting up. You might see if he needs any help. Look forward to seeing your city and state, should be a good time. Been thru Wis. twice but never ridden there. We don't plan on being in Milwaukee the whole time, where's some good riding? Any must ride roads?

Hmm,
CWO2LT, nice name!
From the looks of it and from where you are stationed now, it appears that you took advantage of the direct commisioning program that the.....
???Coast Guard??? offers, well anyway ship mate (Sir!) if you need anything in the Milwaukee area, just let me know. I would have to say, the best ride would be the Lake Front. Just find I-794 and get off on Lakefront drive, it's a nice stretch. Also, if you want anything else, just let me know, I know that us Coasties are possibly going to have a Armed Services ride as well during the event.

Another cheesehead here and I seen where cwo2lt asked about roads to ride here in Wisconsin. I live about 40 miles south of Milwaukee and have taken many excurrsion around the state.

We have a ton of backroads and highways in the old Dairy State. You will see a lot of "Wisconsin Rustic Roads" signs off of the main highways, some good rides along there.

Heading up north of Milwaukee has many great rides. If you get a chance, try to head up towards Door County (Penninsula of Wis). If you get off the Two Rivers Exit and start heading east towards Lake Michigan, you can pretty much follow the lake up and around the pennisula. We usually stay in Kewaunee, which is south of the main towns in Door County (a lot of FIB tourists), but the drive around the Pennisula is great.

We like to ride the River Road the best, which starts out way down your way and heads all the way up to northern Wisconsin/Minnesota. Hell, I would take the river road all the way up from your way, head east from Praire Du Chien and follow the Wisconsin River to Dodgeville. From there, you can take many different routes east to Milwaukee. A lot of cool little towns on the back highways, great places to stop for food, drinks, etc.

If you really want to venture out, heading up through the middle of the state and upper regions of the state are great rides as well, depends on how long you got.

Remembering what the roads were like around here during the 95th, I would look to your exploring Wisconsin roads made during the trip in and out. If you want to venture out from Milwaukee, I would keep your destinations heading North or West, as well as cruise along the lake. Heading south along the lake you will hit a lot of towns, not much lake scenery until you hit Racine or Kenosha (where I live). I know that there is going to be some other parties in our area (Uke's HD in Kenosha has info on some of them) as well. Even heading southwest of Milwaukee is going to give you some great backroads. Head south of Highway 43, then start jumping off on some of the various highways that run East and West, with Lake Geneva a good destination point.

So, I guess to make a long winded message shorter, a lot of great places to ride, you just have to venture out some to hit some of the beauty of Wisconsin.

Thanks Stonesrock. We'll be staying in Madison so the middle of the state is where we'll be going I think. I'm figuring we won't be in Milwaukee the whole 5 days, I want to see the country and can stay home and get drunk. Thanks for the tips.

Cwo2lt,

You’re going to love Madison, it’s a great town! One of my best friends lives up there and we’ve had many a wild time in “Mad City”. A lot of great places to ride around all around Madison. You can basically ride a 100-200 mile radius from Madison and get some great roads, great scenery, great food, great bars. You may even see a cow or two along the way if you’re lucky!

I’ll probably go for one day, I’m not great with huge crowds and this is going to be three times as big as the 95th. The image that sticks out the most to me from the 95th was traffic jams that ran 20 miles or more (on the Interstate), it was hotter than hell, plenty of bikes along the side of the road because of overheating. I know plenty of back ways into the festival grounds, so that should help.

Have a great time and enjoy your stay in the Cheesehead state!

Any campgrounds that are resonably priced for the 100th? Have you heard of any farmers having temporary camps?

I guess it all depends where you want to stay at. It also depends if you want to stay North of Milwaukee (very rural and beautiful) or if you want to stay South of Milwaukee. There are a couple of places that I know of just West of Milwaukee as well.

I'd like to be with in about 20 miles or so. I don't want to drive for hours after partying all day. Can you list some names, websites, or phone numbers of some places? Thanks!

jlbait,

I read in the local paper where some folks were going to be renting out the Racine Fairgrounds (where the fairgrounds are, you are looking at around 35 miles maybe) for the 100th, turning it into a campgroud/festival. I don't know the details, but I will keep an eye out and post some info for other folks looking for accomdations.

At this point, some of the other campgrounds that were being mentioned may be booked up, but you may want to keep checking the HD website for info.

Sorry I don't have any more info at this time.

jlbait,

Just saw this on an email I got from my local HD dealer, they still have blocks of rooms reserved, but I think you have to take them for a week and they may be pricey. The website is www.ukeshd.com

i'm going to be riding into milwaukee(from rochester ny) solo on 8/27 and havent been able to find lodging anywhere near the city. i am considering camping at riders ranch but it means carying a heavier load than i would like with few creature comforts.
are there any mom and pop motels anywhere that arent booked or groups with lodging who might want another to share the expenses?
lookin for a little help here. any advice will be welcome.
